Weekly Top 25 CONCACAF Club Rankings

CONCACAF Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in North America and Latin America - Aug 14, 2012

The Top 5 stayed put for this week.  However, leagues continue to go over 5 matches for the season.  This causes last season's ratings to go away and the ratings are now based solely on this season's results.  The Top 10 saw the addition of Alajuelense and Cartagines from the Costa Rican Primera.  The San Jose Earthquakes moved into this week's Top 10 after a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders.

1.)  Santos Laguna (Liga MX) - Santos was able to keep the top spot, even after a 3-0 loss to Leon.  After a draw and a loss, it is going to be difficult for Santos to keep their top spot when last season's ratings drop off.  Santos will be facing Pumas UNAM (22) at home on Saturday.

2.)  Tigres UANL (Liga MX) - The Tigres drew Queretaro 2-2 at home this past Saturday.  A late goal at the 78' mark from Juninho helped them to salvage the draw.  UANL will be going on the road to face Tijuana (12) this Friday.

3.)  Monterrey (Liga MX) -  Monterrey drew San Luis 1-1 on the road this past week.  Monterrey got on the board early (9' mark) with a goal from Suazo, but then let San Luis tie it up later in the first half.  Monterrey will be facing Atlante (31) at home this coming week.

4.)   Monarcas Morelia  (Liga MX) -  Morelia had a tough week, drawing Guadalajara 1-1 in league play and losing to the Dorados 3-2 in Copa Mexico play.  Morelia will be facing Puebla (30) at home on Friday.

5.)   Cruz Azul (Liga MX) -  Cruz defeated Puebla 1-0 on a Mariano Pavone goal at the 82' mark.  Cruz also defeated Altamira 1-0 in the Copa Mexico.  Cruz Azul will be facing the newly promoted, fast starting Leon (76) at home this week.

Weekly Top 25 CONCACAF Club Rankings

CONCACAF Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in North America and Latin America - Aug 7, 2012

We had our first taste of the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League this past week.

The biggest wins came in Group 1 and Group 7.  With the help of a brace from Thompson-Lambe, Toroto FC (MLS) defeated Aguila (El Salvador) 5-1.  Reyna's hat trick helped Monterrey (Liga MX) to defeat Chorrillo (Panama) 5-1.

Xelaju (Guatemala) and W Connection (Trinidad and Tobago) were the only clubs to draw in the opening match day 2-2.

In Group 2, Herediano (Costa Rica) defeated Real Salt Lake (MLS) 1-0.  In Group 3, Olimpia (Honduras) defeated FAS (El Salvador) 3-0.  In Group 4, Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) defeated Caledonia AIA (Trinidad and Tobago) 3-1.  In Group 5, Isidro Metapan (El Salvador) defeated the Puerto Rico Islanders (Puerto Rico) 3-1.  In Group 6, UANL (Liga MX) defeated Real Esteli (Nicaragua) 4-0.

Match day 2 in the CCL will occur August 21-23.

In the rankings, there was some minor movement within the Top 25, with the exception of Guatemalan clubs.  Liga Nacional (Guatemalan Top Division) has now played 5 matches, so last year's results drop off and this year's results are the only things going into the rankings.  Comunicaciones (Guatemalan Liga)  moved up 12 spots to 16th.

1.)  Santos Laguna (Liga MX) - Santos drew Puebla this past week 2-2.  Santos took a commanding lead early, scoring 2 goals in the first 14 minutes.  But, then they allowed Puebla to fight back to a draw with the help of a brace from Alustiza.  For all of the Team USA fans, Herculez Gomez scored one of Santos' goals at the 14' mark.  Santos will be going on the road this week to face the new promoted Leon (79th).

2.)  Tigres UANL (Liga MX) - UANL drew Atlas 0-0 on the road this past week.  UANL will be facing Queretaro (31st) at home this coming Saturday

3.)  Monterrey (Liga MX) -  Monterrey got in the win column for the first time this season this past week. Monterrey defeated the Jaguares 2-1 at home.  As a side note to this match, Monterrey received more yellow cards (3), than goals (2).  Monterrey will be going on the road this week to face San Luis (35th).

4.)   Monarcas Morelia  (Liga MX) - Morelia used two late goals (84', 88') to draw San Luis 3-3 at home this past week.  Morelia has two matches in this upcoming week.  They will be facing the Dorados (MX 2nd division) in Copa Mexico on Tuesday and going on the road to face Guadalajara (23rd).

5.)   Cruz Azul (Liga MX) - Cruz drew Guadalajara 0-0 this past week.  Cruz is another Top 5 club that will have a busy week.  Cruz will be going on the road to face Altamira (MX 2nd division) on Tuesday and will then stay on the road to face Puebla (28th) on Sunday.

Weekly Top 25 CONCACAF Club Rankings

CONCACAF Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in North America and Latin America - July 31, 2012

I know it has been 3 weeks since the last update.  Between weddings, vacation, and work, I have not had time to get the rankings updated.  I apologize for that and hopefully we can get back into our normal weekly routine of updates.  I am also looking for any thoughts or suggestions for improving/changing the site.  Please leave any thoughts or comments you have.

All of the CONCACAF leagues have started, so we'll start seeing changes in the rankings.  Just so everyone is aware, last season's ratings play very strongly into the rankings at the start of a season.  This will last through the first 5 matches.  After the first 5 matches, last season's ratings will drop off completely.  That is why you see a club like Monterrey still in the Top 5, even though they have gone 0-1-1 in their first 2 matches.

1.)  Santos Laguna (FMF) - Santos started off this season just like they finished last season...at the top of the rankings.  Santos went on the road and defeated Guadalajara (23rd) this week 1-0.  Santos will be facing Puebla (31st) on Friday.  For all of the Team USA fans, Herculez Gomez started and played 58 minutes.  He picked up a yellow card at the 45' mark.

2.)  Tigres UANL (FMF) - UANL defeated Atlante (37th) 2-1 this week.  Atlante got on the board first, but then the Tigres were able to score 2 goals in the last 15 minutes to get the win.  For all of the Team USA fans, Jonathon Bornstein did not play.  UANL will be facing Real Esteli (Nicaragua - 6th) in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) Group Stage on Wednesday and then they will go on the road to face Atlas (25th) on Saturday.

3.)  Monarcas Morelia (FMF) - Morelia got on the board early (24') and that was all it took to defeat Monterrey (5th) 1-0.  Morelia is playing Estudiantes Tecos in Copa Mexico today (7/31) and will be playing San Luis (41st) at home on Friday.

4.)  Cruz Azul (FMF) - Cruz Azul returns to the Top 5 for the first time in a long time.  Cruz defeated San Luis (41st) 2-1 this week.  Cruz scored first at the 16' mark, but then let San Luis tie it up 1-1 (on a Michael Orozco goal) at the 54' mark.  Then Cruz scored again at the 83' mark to take the lead for good.  Cruz plays Toros Neza in Copa Mexico on Wednesday and then faces Guadalajara (23rd) at home on Saturday.

5.)  Monterrey (FMF) - Monterrey has started this season off slowly, not scoring a goal and only drawing once in their first 2 matches.  Monterrey lost 0-1 to Morelia (3rd) on the road this past week.  Monterrey will be kicking of the defense of their Champions League Title today (Tuesday) when they take on Chorrillo (Panama - 62nd) in the group stage of the CCL. They then face Jaguares (14th) at home on Saturday.

Weekly Top 25 CONCACAF Club Rankings

CONCACAF Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in North America and Latin America - July 9, 2012

Sorry for not having an update last week.  Major League Soccer had a quick turn around and started playing matches before I could get the rankings up.  So, instead of having old/incomplete data, I just decided to wait until this week.

The season is starting to wear on MLS teams in the club rankings.  The San Jose Earthquakes are barely holding on to the final top 10 spot after drawing FC Dallas 0-0 and losing to the Portland Timbers 2-1.  The Earthquakes have one of the top (if not the best) offenses in MLS, but they were only able to come away with one goal against two of the weaker clubs in MLS.  Next, the Earthquakes will face Real Salt Lake.  Real Salt Lake is coming off a 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers.  Not only is Real Salt Lake looking to get back into the CONCACAF Top 10, but a win over the Earthquakes would give them the top spot in the MLS Western Conference.

DC United is a club who has been slowly working their way up the CONCACAF rankings.  They are 7-0-3 in their last 10 matches.  Their 3-0 defeat of the Montreal Impact on June 30th moved them into the top spot of the MLS Eastern Conference.  They are competing with the Earthquakes for the best offense in MLS.  With 34 goals, they are only 2 goals behind.  They have 2 of the Top 10 goal scorers in MLS, Chris Pontius (9 goals) and Maicon Santos (7 goals).  DC United will be going on the road this week to face the Houston Dynamo (39th).

1.)  Santos Laguna (FMF) - Season complete.

2.)  Tigres UANL (FMF) - Season complete.

3.)  Monterrey (FMF) - Season complete.

4.)  Monarcas Morelia (FMF) - Season complete.

5.)  Pachuca (FMF) - Season complete.

Weekly Top 25 CONCACAF Club Rankings

CONCACAF Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in North America and Latin America - Jun 27, 2012

This week was not friendly to some Major League Soccer clubs.  After a week where many of MLS' top clubs either lost or had draws, there is only one MLS club remaining in this week's Top 10.  The San Jose Earthquakes defeated both the Colorado Rapids (2-1) and Real Salt Lake (2-1) to move up five spots to 8th.  The Earthquakes currently have the top goal scorer (Wondolowski 13 goals) and the best goal differential (+12) in MLS.  San Jose will put their Top 10 ranking to the test this coming Saturday (6/30) when they face the newly revived LA Galaxy (49th).

And that leads us to our next item...are the LA Galaxy back?  They are currently riding a 3 match winning streak were they defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0, Real Salt Lake 3-2, and most recently the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0.  The Galaxy are this week's biggest movers in the CONCACAF Club Rankings.  They moved up 14 spots to 49th.

Weekly Top 25 CONCACAF Club Rankings

CONCACAF Club Rankings-Top 25 Clubs in North America and Latin America-June 19th, 2012

Major League Soccer has finally gotten going again and there was movement in this week's Top 25.  Sporting Kansas City jumped Pachuca in the rankings to become the only Non-Mexican team in the Top 5.  Real Salt Lake moved up to 7th with a 3-0 win over Chivas USA (59th).  The New York Red Bulls fell out of the Top 10 with a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Fire (29th).  The Vancouver Whitecaps moved into the Top 20 with a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids.  DC United continues to climb the rankings having gone 4-0-1 in their last 5, while the Seattle Sounders continue to drop having gone 0-2-3 in their last 5.

1.)  Santos Laguna (FMF) - Season complete.

2.)  Tigres UANL (FMF) - Season complete.

3.)  Monterrey (FMF) - Season complete.

4.)  Monarcas Morelia (FMF) - Season complete.

5.)  Sporting KC (MLS) - With a 2-0 win over Toronto FC, Sporting KC gets back into this week's CONCACAF Top 5.  Sporting KC currently has the most efficient defense in MLS.  They are only allowing  0.77 goals per match and have the 4th highest goal differential.  This has allowed them to move back into this week's CONCACAF Top 5.  They are only 2 points behind DC United for first place in the Eastern Conference and they have played 3 fewer matches.  The next 2 weeks are going to busy for Sporting.  They are playing 5 matches in the next 15 days.  4 of those matches are MLS and 1 is a US Open Cup match.  Their next match will be on the road tomorrow (June 20th) against the struggling Seattle Sounders FC (18th).  They then fly back across the country to face the Philadelphia Union (80th) on Saturday.

For the second week in a row, there was only one club match in CONCACAF.  The Vancouver Whitecaps FC defeated the Houston Dynamo (45th) 3-1.  With the win, the Whitecaps moved into this week's CONCACAF Top 25 club rankings.  Saprissa (Costa Rica) was the unlucky club who fell out of the rankings.  Starting this weekend, Major League Soccer will be getting back up to full speed.  We should start to see some movement in the Top 25 again.

Weekly Top 25 CONCACAF Club Rankings

CONCACAF Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs in North America and Latin America-May 21st, 2012

1.)  Santos Laguna (FMF) - Santos retains the top spot after defeating Monterrey in the Liguilla Finals 3-2 (agg).  Even though Santos lost to Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions League Finals, they were able to dominate the end of the season winning the regular season Clausura and winning the Clausura Liguilla.

2.)  Tigres UANL (FMF) -  Idle due to the FMF season being over.

3.)  Monterrey (FMF) - Monterrey finishes their season in the CCR Top 3.  They had a weak start in the Apertura going 7-3-7, but they were able to finish the season with a strong run.  They were able to defeat Santos in the CCL, but they were the 2nd best club in the FMF over the last half of the season.

4.)  Morelia (FMF) - Idle due to the FMF season being over.

5.)  Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) - The Sounders hold on to the last spot in this week's CCR Top 5 with a 2-2 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.  It is going to be difficult for Major League Soccer clubs to stay in the top 5 throughout the season.  Seattle has a busy week coming up.  They will be facing the Columbus Crew (52) at home on Wednesday.  They will the be going on the road to face Chivas (54) on Saturday.  These are two of the weaker clubs in MLS, so Seattle can look to regain some ground in the rankings.
